Charleston: The Holy City
Charleston, the South Carolina port city founded in 1670, may be defined by cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts but it is a trend-forward, art & culinary-focused small city. The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor, while Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold where the first shots of the Civil War rang out, lies across the water. While the plantations and waterfront cannons may be what most think of when imagining Charleston, most who come to experience it will find that Charleston’s slower pace, hip dining options, sidewalk window shopping and trendy cocktail culture will delight and surprise.
Dip your toes in the Atlantic Ocean. Three public beaches with smooth sands, gentle water and tidal pools to explore are within a few minutes of downtown Charleston. Go to Folly Beach, Isle of Palms or Sullivan’s Island, a favorite for kids and offers free parking too. Only 20 miles from Charleston, Kiawah Island is world famous for its 10-mile stretch of naturally beautiful shoreline, tapped as one of the nation’s best by the Travel Channel.
Getting Around Charleston
